Shannon Pratt-Phillips

About

Dr. Shannon E. (Pratt) Phillips grew up in Toronto, Canada. Her Bachelors of Science in Nutritional Science was from the University of Guelph. She went on to study equine nutrition and exercise physiology for both her Master of Science (from the University of Kentucky) and her Doctor of Philosophy (from the University of Guelph). Dr. Phillips is currently a Professor of Equine Nutrition in the Department of Animal Science at North Carolina State University. In addition to her commitment to student education, graduate student training and equine nutritional research, Dr. Phillips also provides private equine nutrition services.

Dr. Phillips brings years of experience and education to horse owners and private industries. She developed her first line of products for a feed company in 2002, and has been consulting with individual horse owners and larger facilities ever since. She works closely with veterinarians to develop diets for horses to help manage equine health conditions including metabolic syndrome, obesity, muscular and neurological disorders and growth issues. She provides training and workshops for horse groups, private farms and feed or supplement companies.

 

She is a Past-President of the American Academy of Veterinary Nutrition and is the current President on the Board of Directors for the Equine Science Society. She has more than 35 peer-reviewed papers, and has written books, several book chapters and hundreds of articles for popular press magazines. She lives in Raleigh with her husband Brian, children Oliver and Isabel and several pets. In her spare time she plays tennis and competes in the hunter ring with her horse, Moulin Rouge.
